We put some miles and hours in today. We started out our day with a swim in Palm Springs. It was amazing and relaxing. Then we rolled out towards San Luis Obispo. This was intended to be around 5 hours but we decided to venture into LA since we kind of got punked on our L.A. experience.
Lexy really wanted to see the Hollywood sign, I wanted to see Levitated Mass, and Karen wanted to see Santa Monica Pier. Seems simple……right? Well L.A. has glue on the streets to slow everyone down. I understand that traffic is part of the “charm”. We rolled through really nice neighborhoods and just like that the music twanged in and out and we were in an area which had different charm. I said we need to listen to different music. We were listening to classical music. Karen switched the station and it landed on a gangster rap station. I said turn it up. The music totally fit our drive. It was kind of funny because the music was edited for the radio which added to some creative lyrics. Then the scene changed back to more of a Guns and Roses kind of scene.
We made it to all three destinations. It must have added 4 hours to our drive, but totally worth it. We experienced the traffic, passed a movie crew and saw some of what L.A. has to offer. We finally made it to San Luis Obispo at 9:45pm. We’ll keep it rolling and safe. This photo is from Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). After we experienced the Levitated Mass, we walked over to check out this light installation.

I love modern architecture and now I love Palm Springs modern architecture. This is the Kaufmann Desert House, which has the flare of international modern design. Absolutely an icon for those who dream in minimalist modern design. Probably not a house you’ll accidentally pass, but worth a search.
I lucked out. I pulled over, jumped out and started talking to the gardener. He gave me a little information and told me I could go up the the fence for a closer look. Of course I did, but normally I would stay on the street as to not trespass. Anyhow, this is an icon.
I found an article which might add more interest. https://www.rostarchitects.com/articles/2018/12/29/five-things-you-should-know-about-the-kaufmann-desert-house

Let me just say wow. This place is so beautiful and fun. We started out our day in Palm Springs where we ventured from modern home to modern home. We then grabbed a load of water and headed to Joshua Tree National park. I must note it’s summer and we’re in the desert. It was hot, but it’s a dry heat. (just drink loads of water) My eyes were so delighted, I don’t think we saw a single vista which wasn’t beautiful as far as the eye can see. We climbed rocks and hiked through the forest of Joshua Trees. Great times.
As we were leaving, we met a nice family from Melbourne Australia and we traded family photos. The Dad asked me where is the Joshua Tree. He was looking at a map. I said here’s one. He said no THE Joshua Tree. I said no this is a Joshua Tree, he said you mean that forest of trees we just drove through were all Joshua Trees? ME: Yes, that’s why they named the park Joshua Tree.

Everywhere you go, design is surrounding you. This is from outside of a vacant shop. Appreciate the visual literacy of the designers and architects. I think so many times we become numb to the beauty which surrounds us. Love it.

Palm Springs will not disappoint. This place is fantastic. Modern mid-century buildings everywhere. This makes me so happy.
We arrived around 2:30 after flying and driving all day. After we settled into the Hotel Zoso, it was time to explore the first stop, the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center. Karen and Lexy braved the heat with me. (lol it’s a dry heat.) The museum featured many architects and their designs. A must-see if you’re surrounded by modern architecture. It’s so refreshing seeing modern designs held up and revered. My daughter said she really enjoyed the museum, which tells me she gets it.
After the visiting the museum we ventured into town on foot and took in many designs. I feel like I’m walking through a living museum. So glad we added this to our trip.

Well, I said I’ll post about the ugly. We had our flight cancelled at the end of the day Sunday, of course this was after booking a super unique AIRBnB with a bummer of a cancelation policy. That sort of killed our LA day but oh well. The good news is the weather seems a bit calmer and we are all systems go. (so far)
As the sun was heading towards evening. I decided to grab a quick photos of Buck of Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios on 66. Its nice living in a city with such unique places.

Quick portrait, just after hanging my photos.
Earlier this year I was asked if I would be a featured artist at the Blue Sky Bank in the Boxyard. I of course jumped on the opportunity to share my works. I have a love a dance, with its beauty and grace. The deadline snuck up on me so fast I decided to work with a series of images I had previously made. I have everything printed on metal to pay homage to the metal shipping containers which make up the box yards’ structure.
The opening was a success and good times had by all. This show is still up so if you’re nearby stop in and enjoy the photos. Oh and you can purchase the images if you would like. Let me know what you think.
